Designated SL17 (Sandqvist–Lindroos 17), or the Fenrir nebula, lies a dark nebula in the constellation of Scorpius. It takes on the appearance of a baying wolf and is often referred to by amateur astronomers as the Dark Wolf Nebula. Dark nebulae are clouds of dust in space which absorb visible and ultraviolet light from background stars, re-emitting it in infrared wavelengths which in turn cool the gases around for new star creation. They are notoriously difficult to image and process but the Takahashi E160 under the dark skies of Chile do a great job of teasing out the faint details.
