Located approximately 50-55 million light-years away from Earth in the southern constellation of Eridanus lies a massive galaxy, NGC 1532. It is also known by it’s popular name "Haley's Coronet", and is estimated to be slightly larger than our own Milky Way. Viewed nearly edge-on from Earth, it allows for a detailed view of its structure and dust lanes and also reveals it’s gravitational "tug of war" with its smaller companion, NGC 1531. This interaction has distorted the larger galaxy's shape, created plumes of gas and dust between the two, and triggered bursts of star formation. Eventually, the dwarf galaxy is expected to be consumed in a merger.
